What Happened to Tasks for Canvas?

In 2026, BetterCampus acquired the Tasks for Canvas extension and used it to redirect to their BetterCampus extension by breaking all functionality in an update and replacing it with an advertisement for BetterCampus.

While BetterCampus promises to be free in many of their promotional materials encouraging the transition, many features are now paywalled behind a $119/year subscription for students, and more are broken with users reporting a loss of their (sometimes multi-year) streaks, and 100% user dissatisfaction (outright impressive, not even most politicians manage that) from August to October 2026.

Many users have elected to voice their frustration.

Seeing my streak was one of my favorite parts of canvas.. was top like 1%(or3%) i think with a streak of hundreds of days.. just for it all to be gone due to better campus. Basically my streak reset back to day 1, and now I do not see the point of having this because the update is just overstimulating. – Melissa

Doesn’t work anymore! I have used this app for like 6 year and its completely broken now. very disappointed. – Gabrielle

It’s honestly a really great extension, but joining BetterCanvas made me delete it. If they ever decide to separate, I’d totally come back. – Nahomy

I’m so sad! I’ve used Tasks for Canvas since I was a freshman and my streak was my only motivation to turn in assignments on time. Going from a streak of over 400 days to now 8 days is heartbreaking. I only downloaded BetterCanvas because it displayed a message explicitly saying my streak would be continued over there. I’m forever mourning the loss of my streak and Tasks For Canvas. ๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿ’” – Sofia

Rest in peace, the g.o.a.t. of Blackboard extensions. I’m pissed off. Tasks for canvas was simple and straightforward. I can only imagine the creator sold out to this bloat extension which really sucks. – Chappy

After Jake Silver, one of the developers who joined the original BetterCanvas developer right before things started going down hill, started replying to user complaints, users started calling him out specifically, saying things like “Jake silver you are my sworn enemy from this point until the end of time” and “I have been using Tasks for Canvas for years and I enjoyed the layout of it and how I could easily see all my upcoming assignments on the side of my home page. However, now that it has been moved to BetterCampus the layout is just all wrong and looks way worse and it’s so much more confusing and overwhelming to navigate. Why do all good things need to be ruined??? And Jake Silver I don’t want you replying to this comment unless you plan on switching Tasks to how it used to be”

The solution being promoted by whoever has commandeered the Chrome Web Store page for “Tasks for Canvas” is switching to BetterCampus, which is essentially BetterCanvas but under a new name, with previously-free features now paywalled, and with many issues (such as lost streaks).

Luckily, there is a better solution. Elijah Cantu has forked and re-uploaded the original to the Chrome Web Store, and made it freely available both by source and to use, with no features paywalled, just like things used to be, under the slightly different name “Task Bar for Canvas“. For those who do want the extra features provided by BetterCanvas, he has also released a free fork of it, likewise full featured with nothing paywalled, under the name “CoolerCanvas“
